Story Behind Okella
Thank You for Showing Interest in Okella
When you define the name Okella, you’ll find it speaks to someone who is kind, easygoing, and deeply caring—a true lover of people. Everyone who knew my grandmother, Okella, would agree that she embodied all of that and more.
Known for her sharp sense of humor, unwavering work ethic, and zest for life, Okella was one of the strongest women I’ve ever known. Her presence was a gift, and I’ve made it my mission to preserve just a piece of her legacy. She was a symbol of strength, resilience, and compassion.
On September 23, 2018, shortly after Hurricane Florence ravaged our community, we lost her. She passed peacefully at the remarkable age of 90—the youngest and last surviving sibling of 20. Though she’s no longer with us, her spirit continues to inspire everything I do.
Just days before her passing, Okella performed one final, powerful act of love. As the storm approached, she, along with my parents and uncle, evacuated to Winston-Salem, NC. What we didn’t realize until later was that she had intentionally left her home unlocked. Her reason? “Just in case someone needed it.”
And someone did.
A couple from Pollocksville, displaced by rising floodwaters, discovered her door open and found refuge in her home during the worst of the storm. When we asked Okella about it, she simply said, “Yes, I did.” That was who she was—always ready to help, even without knowing who might need it.
Okella also had a deep love for books. She often bought them for her great-grandkids and kept her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. Inspired by her love of books, her giving heart, and her appreciation for beautiful things, I created Okella’s Book Club.
Through this space, I’ve combined jewelry and purpose—offering both trendy and statement pieces that support youth literacy initiatives. This is my way of sharing a piece of my family, my heart, and her legacy with you.
A portion of every purchase goes toward nonprofit organizations that support children’s literacy and education.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for helping carry Okella’s light forward.

In 2020, as the vision for the brand evolved, I decided it was time for the company to stand on its own. On September 8, 2020, the name was officially changed to Okella—a tribute to legacy, love, and purpose. Rest assured, our mission remains the same: a portion of every sale continues to support organizations dedicated to improving youth literacy.
My name is Kim Freeman, the proud middle child of three, born and raised in the small town of Pollocksville, North Carolina—where, as they say, “everybody knows everybody.” It was a wonderful place to grow up, full of close-knit community and Southern charm.
I attended Jones County Public Schools and later earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from NC Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC. From there, I pursued and completed an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources Management from Ashford University.
Today, I continue to work in Human Resources, a field I’ve been committed to for over 20 years. Outside of work, I’m passionate about giving back to the community—volunteering with Haven House Services in Raleigh, NC, and Habitat for Humanity of Wake County.
I’m also a proud member of the Johnston County Alumnae Chapter of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about me and the heart behind Okella.
With gratitude,
